2020 has been a long and eventful year, to say the least. Many of us want 2021 to get here already so we can start on a clean slate. However, there’s one thing you should make sure to do before the year ends: visit your dentist. If you haven’t had your two routine checkups and cleanings this year, you could be wasting money, especially if you have dental insurance. By not using all of your benefits, you’re essentially paying your premiums for no reason! Continue reading to find out how you can make the most of your insurance coverage and save money in the long run.

How Dental Insurance Works

When you sign up for dental insurance, you agree to pay a monthly premium in exchange for discounts on dental services. In order for the insurance company to step in and start covering your care, you’ll need to meet your deductible. You’ll also notice that you have an annual maximum, which is the highest amount that your insurance will pay toward your dental work in a calendar year. However, anything that goes over your annual maximum will be your financial responsibility.

Every insurance plan is different, but your dentist’s team can gladly go over the details of your policy and maximize your benefits.

What Services Are Typically Covered?

Dental insurance primarily focuses on preventive care, so services like checkups and cleanings are usually covered at 80-100%. You’ll likely receive 70-80% coverage on minor restorative treatments like fillings and 50-70% coverage on major procedures like dentures, dental crowns, and bridges.

Attending your routine checkups is a great way to take advantage of the benefits you’re paying for. You could prevent serious oral health problems from developing and requiring expensive treatment later on.

Why Should You Use Your Benefits Before the Year Ends?

Once the calendar turns from December 31 to January 1, any unused benefits will not carry over into the next year. Anything you’ve accrued toward your annual maximum or deductible is reset to zero.

Once you’ve met your deductible, it’s in your best interest to get any additional dental work you need, like a root canal or crown, taken care of before the year ends. That way, your copay will be significantly smaller. Not to mention, there’s always the chance that your coverage will change with every new year.

You’re already paying for insurance coverage, so why not use it? Don’t let your premiums go to waste. Call your dentist and get any necessary dental work completed before 2021 arrives. Your wallet and your smile will thank you!
