Veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic dental treatments thanks to their ability to transform practically any dental imperfection into a dazzling smile. And with the help of modern dental technology and materials, you can easily expect your veneers to last 10-20 years or longer! However, that’s only with the proper care. If you want your veneers to last as long as possible, it’s important that you make a few minor adjustments to your daily diet. Here are some nutritional tips to help keep your smile looking its best!
Food to Avoid with Temporary Veneers
In most cases, a patient will need to wear temporary veneers for a few weeks while their custom veneers are being carefully crafted in a dental lab. These temporary veneers give you a chance to “test drive” your new smile while keeping your teeth safe and comfortable. Since they’re only held in place with temporary cement, it’s important to watch what you eat during these few weeks to ensure they stay in place. It’s highly recommended that you avoid:
- Very hard foods: The pressure from chewing on hard snacks and foods can chip your temporary veneers and weaken the cement that holds them in place. Avoid foods like hard candy, whole fruits, raw vegetables, ice, popcorn, and similar snacks.
- Tough meat: While protein is important for the health of your teeth, you should avoid tough meats with temporary veneers, including steak, ribs, and drumsticks. Instead, opt for softer proteins, like chicken, fish, and eggs.
- Acidic drinks: Highly acidic drinks like regular and diet soda, sports and energy drinks, alcohol, and caffeinated beverages can potentially stain your temporary veneers, and they may burn through the bonding agent that helps hold them in place.
What to Avoid with Permanent Veneers
Your permanent veneers will be much stronger than your temporary veneers. When you get them, you’ll be free to enjoy many more foods and drinks without worry! However, you should still take some precautions in your daily diet to ensure your new smile stays beautiful for many years to come. Once you have your permanent veneers, here are a few important things to avoid:
- Chewing on hard foods or items: While permanent veneers utilize more durable materials and a stronger bonding agent, they can still be damaged or dislodged by hard foods or items. For the safety of your veneers and your natural teeth, avoid chewing on hard items like ice, your fingernails, pen caps, and pencils.
- Overindulging in staining foods and drinks: Permanent veneers are much more stain-resistant than natural teeth, but you should still avoid overindulging in staining foods or drinks like coffee, pasta sauce, and balsamic vinegar. After all, highly pigmented particles could still stain the bonding agent and the teeth around your veneer!
- Heavy drinking and tobacco use: Tobacco and heavy alcohol use are detrimental in many ways, including to your smile. These bad habits leave your teeth weaker and more susceptible to infection and can stain your veneers or cause them to lose their grip on your teeth.
