What Are Metal-Free Dental Restorations?
You may be wondering exactly what types of restorations can be made without metal. These include:
- Dental Crowns
- Inlays and Onlays
Although dentists used traditional amalgam to create these restorations in the past, research has shown there are many negative aspects to using metal. Not only can it create dark rings at the base of your tooth, but it can also be toxic over time. With this new knowledge, more and more dentists are switching to metal-free restorations to improve patient smiles.
Benefits of Metal-Free Dental Restorations
We understand that by using metal fillings, crowns, bridges, and more, it sounds as if these restorations will hold up much longer than any other material, but the great news is that there are many benefits to using prosthetics that are not made of metal, including:
- They’re hypoallergenic, which means, patients with sensitivities and allergies to metal can now be treated with a non-metal solution.
- They’re biocompatible, so the materials are more environment-friendly and mercury-free.
- You’ll have greater confidence in your smile seeing it complete once again.
- Your teeth will be strengthened thanks to the use of proper protection and more of your tooth structure remaining untouched or unaltered.
- You’ll enjoy a restoration that lasts a decade or longer.
What Can I Expect During the Process?
Depending on the type of procedure you’re having completed, the process can take one or two appointments.
A tooth-colored filling will only require one visit to our office, and the process is actually quite simple. One of our skilled dental professionals will begin by cleaning the area of the tooth that is damaged or decayed. Once it is flushed out and free of any debris, your dentist will use a composite resin that will be matched to the color of your natural tooth. Applying to your tooth, we will sculpt and shape it to blend in with the rest of your smile before hardening it into place using a special light. This will seal the material and prevent reinfection or further damage from occurring.
If the damage or decay is too severe and a filling will not suffice, your cosmetic dentist can have a custom-made dental crown made by lab technicians. This will require that you see us for two appointments. During your initial visit, we will clean out the damaged tooth and seal it just as we would with a traditional filling. However, the next step is quite different. In order to make sure the crown fits properly, we will need to file down the natural tooth and take an impression. This will serve as a blueprint for the technicians to create your custom restoration.
Once it is ready, you will return to our office to have your temporary crown removed and the permanent one put into place. We will cement it so that it thoroughly protects your tooth and prevents harm or injury.
