Oral Conscious Sedation

Oral conscious sedation is the answer to many patients’ prayers, in that all you need to do is take a prescribed pill to help any dental nerves quickly melt away. This approach is ideal for patients who experience mild to moderate dental phobia, and we’ll have you take the pill before you’re in our office so you’re guaranteed to feel completely relaxed from check-in to checkout. We do require that you have a friend or family member drive you to and from the office the day of your visit!

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

nitrous oxide mask

Nitrous oxide, better known as “laughing gas,” has been used by dentists for over 100 years. Patients simply inhale the gas through a small nasal mask, and within minutes, a warm blanket of calm will come over them. The mask stays on for the entire appointment, and once it’s removed, the patient should feel normal again within a matter of minutes. It’s safe, effective, and so gentle that we can even use it with small children.

IV Sedation

For patients who have extreme dental phobia, require extensive care, or have physical or mental special needs, IV sedation is often the key to a pleasant dental experience. A sedative is administered directly into the bloodstream, helping a patient quickly drift into a deep state of relaxation. Better yet, we’re able to adjust a patient’s sedation level throughout the appointment as needed, ensuring that no matter what’s happening, they feel comfortable and safe.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Woman experiencing sedation dentistry in Rowlett

If you’re one of the millions of Americans who is suffering from dental anxiety or phobia, sedation dentistry is here to help you get the essential dental care you need without the stress associated with it. However, you may still have some unanswered questions about how it works. Here are the answers to some of the most common queries we receive about sedation dentistry in Rowlett. If you don’t see the information that you’re looking for below, give us a call! We’d be more than happy to answer your questions and schedule you for an appointment when you’re ready.

Is sedation dentistry safe?

For most patients, sedation dentistry is perfectly safe. Out of all of the options, nitrous oxide is the safest for the highest number of people. Before deciding whether or not to administer sedation, we will go over your medical history and current medications to rule out any possible negative interactions. While you’re sedated, the dentist and team will closely monitor your vitals at all times to ensure that you are safe.

Is sedation dentistry safe for kids?

If your child is afraid of the dental office, sedation can help them receive the care they need while reducing their risk of suffering from dental anxiety later in life. Nitrous oxide is the type of sedation that is used most commonly for kids, but oral conscious and IV sedation can also be used in more severe cases. Be sure to talk to your child’s dentist about any medication they are taking as well as any health conditions that they have. Often times, nausea is the only side effect of sedation. To reduce this risk, limit your child’s food and fluid intake before their procedure.

Will I remember anything with dental sedation?

Even though you are technically awake with most forms of sedation, chances are that you won’t remember much of your procedure. IV sedation is more likely to make you forget your treatment than oral conscious sedation and nitrous oxide. The memory loss effect that sedation has can make getting dental care much easier for patients with extreme anxiety and dental phobia.

Will I feel any pain with dental sedation?

While you remain awake, the sedation options we provide suppress your body’s ability to register pain, but you may still feel some pressure. Depending on the procedure, you may also have your mouth numbed with a local anesthetic so that you remain perfectly comfortable and pain-free.
